International Students in Canada

November 28th, 2008

Many international students are demanded to get a study permit from Immigration and Citizenship Canada before entering the country. The study permit should be gained from a high commission, Canadian embassy, or consulate outside the country, except for the case of students from Miquelon and St. Pierre or the USA, who can ask for their study permit. Demanded documentation typically comprises a visa, an acceptance letter from a Canadian institution, a health certificate, a language proficiency certificate, and financial guarantees. Foreign students should have a good passport, which assures their readmission to their native country or other country after staying in Canada.
Usually, the study permit is good for the study period‘s duration. This indicates the student should attend only a particular institution, in a particular program. The permit can be revoked or extended, grounded on the satisfactory academic performance of the student and other considerations. Also, the permit allows full-time foreign students a full-time working on campus and applies for renewal from within the country when they choose to study for a much longer period. When the employment is necessary to their study programs, these students can be eligible for employ off-campus.
Foreign students do not need the study permits when they intend to take programs or courses in Canada, which six months. But they should complete the program or course within the period permitted for their stay in the country.
